Delayed presents... Never Late

Gëinst - Hiber Trace [Never Late 004]

Drawing a coherent link between various influences, French artist Gëinst joins Brooklyn-based Never Late for their 4th release with 'Hiber Trace' where his analog-driven productions expand and contract time and space. The clear consideration for detail combined with an essence of tight timing and drawn delays, sets the groundwork for this EP. The accompanying artwork reflects not only the music but keeps a connection to the human element, which is a common thread throughout his work. Stark rhythms take us on twists and turns with abundant drops of surprises throughout. One is only left asking: where will he take us now?

'Beyond Layers' arrives with a purpose we are but to discover. All there is to do is let oneself be guided by the soundscape that Gëinst creates. From the first moment we hear the intention behind every current, every beat, every silence. It envelopes us, introducing a profound space wherein which we can land and take off from, guiding us deliberately with finely tuned clicks, hums and hisses. 'Murmures' opens with a mélange of calmness and suspense. Building on the soft syncopated rhythms, a muted voice reminds us we are not alone. This nicely preempts 'Hiber Trace', the EP namesake emerging as a crisp track with a steadily evolving groove. Muted hi-hats, snares, and kicks are balanced with strong drumbeats that travel through the body, activating muscles to contract with the same frequency. 'Euphoria' introduces yet deeper elements as though now passing through an ancestral forest. Organic sounds, resembling digeridoos and croaks like those of frogs on the forest floor, are accompanied by a surge carrying us to the next destination - 'Mugen', where we are greeted by a focused drum ensemble to be overtaken by stretches of lasers whispering echoes of spatial descents - until finishing as brusquely as it began. Still within the same realm, we experience the power of 'Labyrinth'. This may be the most intricate track of the EP, summing all the previous ones into a final, powerful crescendo. Delicious drone drops preempt a soft closing allowing us to find a moment to return with a gentle landing. Exquisite.

Tensen Park - Jurassimo [Never Late 003]

Close your eyes, take a deep breath & allow your mind to bring you on a journey to a far away land. When your eyes open, you appear inside of a lush yet strangely digital landscape, billions of years into the past where the planet is overflowing with a myriad of the most unusual plants & animals. You find yourself comforted by the natural serenity of it all, the lack of human influence on the world around you. Submerged in the depths of cool, dense, mysterious jungles, interrupted only by the occasional river snaking through the trees. You trek across the most vivid of green mountains & through deep valleys that are peppered with crystal clear blue waters from the melted glaciers of a past ice age. It’s just the slightest bit familiar yet there is not a human in sight. A delicate shimmering coats the surface of everything you see. It’s as if you are in a dreamlike, artificial state of consciousness. This is the world of Tensen Park’s ‘Jurassimo’.

The Amsterdam-based producer takes you on an introspective ride through 4 dubby, ambient & IDM-adjacent tracks, each with a cool wash of crispy effervescence & crystalline ear candy. The music is full of so much beautiful detail which sounds as if it was performed in an improvisational manner. There is a meticulousness & attention to detail that is heard throughout yet everything somehow sounds unpretentious & flows naturally. The EP closes with a 5th track which is a wonderfully crunchy & upbeat rework from friend & occasional collaborator Imnop.

Aspetuck - Early Color [Never Late 001]

Rooted in those rare moments of tranquility throughout a parent’s life, Early Color is the auditory memoir of Griff through his time as a stay-at-home dad to a growing toddler making sense of the world. Conceptually, the album is laid out as a natural progression starting with the beautiful field recordings of ‘Zoom Deck’ and warm melody of ‘Hemmed’, both evoking visions of a hazy, forest morning, slowly waking up after night’s embrace. Shaking off the slumber, ‘Steel Wool’ provides an energetic start to the day as most children tend to do, to the dismay of some parents. Followed by the understated grooves of ‘Bubby & the Submersible’.

Approaching the second half of the album, ‘Trace Fossil’ and ‘Atoll’ kick things into gear with ear-worm-like melodies that build and build throughout into an emotional trip, while ‘FGH’ brings a more melancholic take. Capping off the string of four on the floor tracks is the growling ‘Why Yellow’, a more serious number that would fit well in many a dj set. Alighting from the burst of energy, we have the breakish beats of ‘Resnooze’, whose warm bass-lines and wide ranging synths envelop the listener. Finally arriving at the last track, the aptly named ‘Sitting Quietly Looking at Things’ is a musical combination of all that was prior. Emotive, textured, impactful, as the spoken word sampled lends such an air to the track.

Early Color’s artwork was also created by Griff, through a series of layered scans and is evocative of both his music, and the visual direction of Never Late. As a collection of personal moments, sounds, experiences will be key to future releases, as we strive to find the best expression of each artist that we work with.
