Sundays are for... SOMA
Sundays are the most special day of the week. Waking up in bed with my wife, listening to the warm, soft rain tinging off the tin roof, cozied up. Our baby daughter lets us know she is awake and hungry by babbling from the other room. I cook breakfast for all. We play on the floor with her toys, our dog watches, nestled up in her favourite spot on the corner. The rain eases to a halt, we put the baby down for a nap. I check the forecast, grab a board and walk down for a surf.
The morning’s rain has cleared away any weekend crowds. Green velvet, the ocean stretches out with the remaining low-lying grey clouds hiding the horizon. Watching from the cliffs above, an invitation extended by a set rolling through. Waiting, watching, catching waves. Feeling the flow, drifting off in my own head through the lulls in between. A friendly chat and a smile shared with other locals. Time washes away. I catch one after filling my quota of joy.
Home again, the rest of the afternoon is spent lazily on the couch, listening through some old vinyl, teaching the baby the classics until the smell of the wife’s cooking draws us in for dinner. We all eat together. With a kiss on the head, the baby drifts off to dream. Huddled up with candles lit, we chose a movie, nothing new, something from a few decades ago with a nostalgic glow. Blow out the candles and upstairs to retire, a solo moment for gratitude while brushing my teeth. Falling asleep in a warm embrace, the sounds of the sea breeze fade us out.
