PREMIERE: Special Zip - Dust (Toki Fuko Remembrance Mix) [spclnch]
More than five years have passed since we last wrote about Special Zip. Back then it was Ufologist, a standout from his Minimal Antagonist EP on spclnch. Since then, the producer resurfaced with an album on Cold Tear Records and another EP for spclnch, leaving a sparse yet consistently intriguing trail of releases.
Now he returns to spclnch with Dr. Caligari’s Experiment, an album featuring eight original productions alongside remixes from Toki Fuko and Alexander Bogdanov. Across its ten tracks, Special Zip explores the lighter side of dub techno. There is plenty of depth to be found, but also movement, warmth, and a sense of momentum that makes much of the record feel particularly suited to open-air listening. It’s easy to imagine several of these tracks finding a comfortable home in daytime festival sets throughout the summer.
Premiering today is Toki Fuko’s “Remembrance Mix” of the album opener Dust.
The opening moments make the track’s dub techno roots immediately apparent. The interesting part is what happens around those chords rather than the chords themselves. Throughout the remix, subtle percussive adjustments continuously reshape the groove, allowing familiar elements to take on slightly different characteristics as the track progresses. The chords remain the central figure, but they never dominate the picture.
Dub techno is often associated with saturation, haze, and beautiful imperfections. Here, everything feels remarkably clean and deliberate. Every sound occupies its own space, making even the smallest movements noticeable. The relationship between the chords and percussion becomes the real focal point, creating a sense of motion without relying on dramatic shifts or obvious climaxes. There is no single defining moment here. No dramatic breakdown, no oversized payoff. The pleasure comes from following small changes as they unfold, gradually revealing new details without ever disrupting the flow.
Dust (Toki Fuko Remembrance Mix) appears on Dr. Caligari’s Experiment, set for release on July 23 via spclnch.
