PREMIERE: R.Hz - Greenhouse [spclnch BLACK]
spclnch BLACK made a strong first impression with Toki Fuko’s Phantom Scripts, a release that gave the spclnch offshoot an immediate identity: dub techno stripped to its essentials, but never drained of color. We premiered “Insomnia” from that record, and it remained one of our favorites of the year. Now, with its third installment, the label continues to expand that language, patiently sketching a constellation of artists working in the deeper, more textural margins of the form.
The new chapter belongs to R.Hz, the Moscow-based producer whose name has become closely linked with spclnch over the years. With numerous releases carrying the R.Hz and spclnch stamp, he has become one of the label’s steady internal forces. We covered his track Spectrum back in 2023, so it feels right to return to his work with Greenhouse, taken from his forthcoming ten-track album Hybrid Dub.
Greenhouse is one of the record’s four central cuts, given its own place on the vinyl edition. There is a pleasing contradiction at the center of the track. It feels open and enclosed at once. The chords glow with classic dub techno warmth, but the rhythm underneath is fractured and slightly off-axis, giving the track a subtle nervous system. It belongs to the lighter side of the record, alongside Pacific, Wandering Stars, and Sequoia, yet its light has depth and moisture to it. The pads expand slowly, then vanish like condensation from glass. The groove keeps moving in small, crooked steps, while the harmonics gather around it with a calm, vegetal patience. True to its title, “Greenhouse” suggests a place where life multiplies quietly behind a transparent surface, visible enough to draw you in, hidden enough to keep its secrets.
