Electronic music has always lived two lives. One belongs to clubs, festivals, smoke machines, and oversized sound systems. The other happens at home. Late evenings. Sunday mornings. Headphones. A comfortable chair. The records that stay with us the longest usually manage to exist comfortably in both worlds.
Toronto's Stasis Recordings have spent more than two decades exploring that intersection. Their catalog has always felt equally at home on a sound system and in a living room, never sacrificing one experience for the other. Today's premiere leans wholeheartedly toward the second setting.
Pierre Nesi, better known as Owl, returns to the label two years after Beyond A Moonless Night, his collaborative album with Inhmost. This time he arrives alone with Odyssey Beyond Known Space, seven pieces built around patience, restraint, and atmosphere. The album draws inspiration from the vastness of the universe, but its emotional core feels much closer to home. Reflective, personal, and carefully paced, it creates space for the listener to bring their own thoughts into the experience. The best home listening records rarely ask you to stop what you're doing. They simply make whatever you're doing feel different.
Nebular Tempest, our premiere for today, captures that balance perfectly. It has enough detail to pull you in, but enough space to exist alongside whatever else is happening around you. A melody slowly comes into focus, surrounding textures shift and evolve, and before long the track becomes part of the atmosphere rather than something separate from it.
Odyssey Beyond Known Space is the sort of record you'll probably return to without planning to. Not because it demands another listen, but because it naturally slips back into your day. It is arriving July 31 via Stasis Recordings.
