PREMIERE: Nils Edte - Cogitat II [Predawn Records]
Having had the good fortune to meet Nils Edte a few years ago in person when we both played the 2024 edition of Above Below, I always tend to smile when I see something new from him grace the inbox. It was an impactful weekend, one that I look back on fondly. The time spent was fun, and full of good laughs. The Chiltern Hills providing the ultimate backdrop to match the warmth and feeling of familiarity within. He had just released his LP collaboration with Mexico City based artist, Eafhm, for which you can read my full review of ‘Glossolalia’ here. I was eager to meet the Stuttgart based artist, and find out more about the release, and concept behind the artwork.
It's only fitting that today we find ourselves in a similar situation, albeit not London, but Barcelona, not Above Below, but Mostra. Each moment, distinct in its identity yet foretelling of the future. The setting, and locale may change but the core stays the same. With all of this in mind, I’m very pleased to be discussing his forthcoming debut album on Predawn Records, Cogitat. But what is in a name? It's a short mental hop, to arrive at cogitate, which for our non-english readers means to think deeply, ponder, meditate, or reflect upon something seriously. All actions I would agree to describe a core motivation for what Nils has used to pull together for this album’s vision. One that stretches from the ambient, experimental realms to club friendly driving tunes, keeping the energy flowing. The core feeling being intentionality, nothing wasted, no fluff.
Cogitat II starts off immediately, swirling around the listener with the poise, texture, and panning that we’ve all come to love and adore. Whispery pads, and guttural bassy kicks deliver a staggering groove and ambiance that would fit well in a dark room, the patrons swaying side to side. The pops and crackles, flashing in and out of existence, bursting with energy.
Cogitat will be released into the world, April 25. Both digitally and on vinyl.
