PREMIERE: Josh Saxer - Deltapark [Natural Positions]

Sometimes you hear a song for the first time & it takes your mind to a familiar place, evoking a vivid memory seemingly attached to that song, like an invisible thread through your consciousness. But.. the memory has no actual connection to the song. How could that possibly be, when you’re hearing it for the first time?

This beauty & sometimes mystery of music & it’s influence on the human brain is a spectacular thing. When my friend Vinsen connected me with Nic of Natural Positions, I heard ‘Deltapark’ & it sent me on a journey back in time. My consciousness was immediately rocketed to La Nature Festival, almost exactly 1 year ago. I was in the middle of the Belgian forest where that very same Vinsen & myself pranced around a wooden dancefloor next to giant speaker stacks as the early afternoon rays of sun warmly filtered in through the trees. I recall the music at the time having this distinct light & airy flair, with a tinge of jazz & an ongoing groove that somehow never got old. It just kept you moving along, with a big grin on your face. It’s almost as if my brain tricked me into thinking ‘Deltapark’ was actually the song playing in my memory from that day, because all of those descriptors can be applied to this very track.

Time floats by when you listen to Josh Saxer’s work. The project is one of a handful of pseudonyms & collaborations from prolific Swiss multi-instrumentalist, sound designer & composer Sascha Hodler. This breezy, almost 14-minute-long title track resides on a new EP for Amsterdam’s Natural Positions. It’s delicate & light-hearted, with these lovely gently swung & easy-going complementing rhythms. ‘Deltapark’, released on May 29th, is his first official release under this new guise & is the prelude to an upcoming vinyl release that’ll see the light of day on Natural Positions sometime next year.
