PREMIERE: amuwa - Synapse [Pure Space]
Sydney based imprint Pure Space should be a stranger to none by now. Since its inception in 2019, the label run by the indomitable Andy Garvey has amassed a backlog of pure class and genre bending releases, that sound as fresh today as when they were unveiled. Having had the pleasure of first working with Andy via Mara’s At Every Corner release, and Pannotia’s Cell EP, I’m pleased to hit a tri-fecta with amuwa’s forthcoming Variance Model.
Four tracks, and full to the tin, amuwa’s musical efforts waste not, with his first release on Pure Space. Each entry feels alive with fresh arrangement, intriguing energy flows and while it feels odd to put the the two descriptors in the same sentence, playful and deep simultaneously. I can imagine many smiling faces on dancefloors while listening through.
Synapse rounds out Variance Model, a wobbly muted object of attention, bringing things tight to the chest. A bit of melancholy, a bit of space-like sweeping synths spiral in and out of existence. Flanked by breakish percussion and low growl like bass line really help keep it all locked in.
