Delayed with... Material Object

For our first Delayed with mix of the year, we present a gripping 2 hour recording from Material Object, a multifaceted, self-proclaimed ‘antipodean’ artist currently based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I first stumbled upon the Material Object project quite recently I’ll happily admit, by way of Old Technology, the label we most recently featured in our Label Spotlight series. His work is truly one of a kind - I was floored when I first heard his ’Colour’ album. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in his studio to observe this meditative manner in which he seems to have hypnotized his machine like a marionette, squeezing every ounce of possibility & truly playing it like an instrument. He is very much unafraid of pushing things to the brink, using resonance & overdrive in ways that give his sound this uniquely jagged texture, like bits of broken tempered glass. The music is so immersive, he draws you in with this minimalism you can immediately hear in his most recent works ‘Colour’ & ’Mono’, both made entirely with his Cwejman S1 & a Strymon Magneto delay. In addition to two albums with Old Technology, he has a broad discography of more than two dozen releases including a treasure trove of live jams on his own Bandcamp, along with two EPs on Semantica. He has collaborated with the late Pete Namlook, as well as Atom™ with whom he ran a label called No. from 2014 to 2022. His live sets have been heard on dancefloors around the world at renowned gatherings such as Labyrinth & Berghain.

This past August, Material Object recorded this set at a special gathering in his country of residence. “The mix was born in the forests of the Carinthian Alps at the annual Endemit festival in Koroška, Slovenia as part of a performance for the opening set on the second day of the event. I wanted to reboot everyone's brain, wipe them clean from the night before with a psychedelic palate cleanser. A good, honest mind scrub in preparation for a short warp drive trip through the Dr. Who vortex tunnel, the bass reverberating up and down the lush forest valley and up the sides of the mountain, before handing over the controls to the the local talent.”

There is truly no way for the listener to predict where things will go throughout this recording, as Material Object pulls your mind through a psychedelic vortex. It ebbs & flows like the tides & currents of the ocean. At times the waves are rough, tumultuous & full of tension, but before you know it, the weather turns & the ocean is smooth like glass with barely a cloud in the sky. I can only imagine the scene there that evening, as he ushered people in for day two, elegantly guiding their minds from sunset through dusk to dark.
